Sometimes politics can be above rocket-science. You need to eat, remain seated in order to properly understand it. You need to know very well how to survive and succeed. You need to be gifted.
Over the weekend, a bunch of students from University Of Dodoma, ditched their books and made their way to former Prime Minister, Edward Lowassa’s residence in Dodoma. The reason for their “surprise visit” was to “convince” him to be their next Messiah. Okay probably not a Messiah but next President. The feeling of happiness is rising inside these students [and many others] just from the mention of his name and the IDEA. It’s like a beer-commercial joviality. They should just not forget that ideas die away for lack of anything to hang them on.
Whether we like it or not, Lowassa is believed to be vying for the post. He needs it badly. His actions speak louder than words. From what we know or have seen so far, there are strategic steps being taken to outmaneuver any competition out there. That, of course, is to run against the current of his party’s political traditions. He has been warned before [alongside other hopefuls]. I think his party understands that a person who has complete power over others becomes wicked.
But according to his own confessions, he needs to be “convinced”. I know, as if someone who is born a leader or sees the importance of leading actually needs conviction. I thought that should be an outright call. Well…we see things differently. In democracy we even see things in completely different spectrums. And that is okay.
While this kind of marches and conviction agendas are seemingly okay, we also have to be aware of a couple of things. Our awareness hunger could be just out of curiosity or to feel in the historical gaps. Can you just get up and decide to pay the former PM a “surprise visit”? How would you know he is home and in Dodoma? I’m not even going to mention the prepared seats, tents etc. That could actually be just the way his residence is set-up. He is, after all, former PM who is apparently covering news than the sitting president. Guests are expected-anytime, right?
Then my infuriating question; what do these students from UofD know that we probably don’t? If he were going to actually succumb to their conviction [and from others as it goes] and decide to run, what would be his platform? Unfortunately, if you don’t know and you actually marched, Malcolm X would have called you an “Uncle Tom”. Seriously!
Of course I have heard about Education, Education, Education. That’s good. How though? I thought students should be the ones to educate the masses especially in villages where people believe Nyerere is still alive and still the President. Students shouldn’t only march. They should march with questions-real questions. They should march to demand serious answers and not just historical facts that no one can actually substantiate. That is if we all agree that when it comes to national elections, we should all forget about middle-of-the-road philosophy. Simama uhesabiwe.
In my opinion, seeking serious answers, clear and workable policies will increase the effectiveness of not only the electoral process but will enable the students to actually play a more important and meaningful role in nation-building processes. The banners shouldn’t be about praising alone. Many should bear questions. When you graduate who will employ you? Anyone? Don’t allow yourself to be like an animal in a cage that, even if the door opened, wouldn’t dare move.
Youth, go ahead and march. Convince whoever you deem fit for the office to run. It’s one good way of participating in democracy. However, don’t just march. Ask Serious Questions And Demand Serious Answers. Don’t just be thoroughly enjoying the danger-excitement. Be aware of everything. Don’t live in a silent movie.
